    Attention Mentors: 2015 CHOP Distinguished Research Trainee Awards - Call for Nominations, Deadline Extended to November 14

    Attention CHOP Mentors: Nominate your Postdoc, Physician Fellow or Graduate Student for the 2015 CHOP Distinguished Research Trainee Award! The CHOP Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) is pleased to announce the opening of the 2015 Distinguished Research Trainee Award call for nominations. The deadline for nomination has been extended to November 14, 2014.

    The goal of this program is to recognize outstanding research trainees at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Mentors are encouraged to nominate their exemplary trainees (postdoctoral fellows, medical/physician fellows or CHOP-based graduate students) to be our next Distinguished Research Trainees. The winners (one from each trainee pool) will be featured on the OPA’s Research Trainee Web Portal, be recognized with an award certificate at 2015 CHOP Research Poster Day, and receive a monetary prize. The certificate will be presented by Dr. Philip Johnson, Chief Scientific Officer of the CHOP Research Institute.


    Please note that the nomination process has changed for the 2015 award. To nominate your trainee:

    1) Submit the Distinguished Research Trainee Award Nomination Form, completed by the trainee’s mentor. This form should describe why the individual is worthy of the award, emphasizing the specific accomplishments of the individual while a trainee at CHOP and his or her potential for future success.

    2) Attach/append a current CV for the trainee, which includes descriptions of awards earned and hyperlinks to representative publications/abstracts.

    These nominations will be reviewed and voted upon by the faculty-led CHOP Research Trainee Advisory Committee (RTAC). All nominees, including the winners, will be notified of this recognition in January 2015.


    Please Note: Individuals who have completed their training phase at CHOP (defined as pre-doctoral fellows who have been granted their PhD, postdoctoral fellows who have completed their five years of eligibility as a postdoctoral fellow, or clinical fellows who have moved to an instructor or instructor-like position) must be within one year of completion of their training to be eligible for the award. Applications from individuals that are not qualified based on this criterion will be returned without review.

    All nominations must be submitted by November 14, 2014, at 12pm.

    UPenn Career Services - November Events

    Job Search Series: U.S. Employment for International Students: Job Search Advice and Immigration Options – Q & A for graduate students and postdocs

    At this Question and Answer session/workshop, representatives from International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and Career Services will discuss visa considerations and job search strategies for international graduate students and postdocs who are hoping to find employment in the United States. Most of the hour will be devoted to audience questions.

    Take a minute to review some of the career resources on the Career Services website, including this page. International students are also encouraged to access the online subscriptions that Career Services has to GoinGlobal and Uniworld through the Career Services Library’s online subscriptions.

    Job Search Series: Negotiating Offers

    Do you have a job offer, or hope to have one soon? Come to a workshop to learn the timing and techniques of negotiation and how to get started on the right foot with your new employer. Patricia Rose, Director of Career Services, will cover what can and cannot be negotiated, and how to make the negotiating process a win/win both for you and the employer. She will also discuss taking things such as cultural fit with the organization into account when deciding whether to take an offer.     NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP)- Application Opens September 1

    The National Institutes of Health LRPs repay the student loans of doctoral level, biomedical or behavioral researchers conducting research funded by nonprofit institutions.

    Approximately 1,500 scientists benefit from the $70 million plus NIH invests each year through the extramural LRPs.

    The FY 2015 application cycle will open on September 1, 2014. The application is available online at www.lrp.nih.gov

    Why Apply?

  • Repay up to $70,000 of qualified educational debt with a 2 year contract
  • Most federal and state taxes are paid by the LRP
  • An average of 50% of all LRP applications are funded
  • Undergraduate, graduate, medical school and other health professional school loans may qualify for repayment
  • NIH funding is not required to participate
  • Eligibility

  • Hold a doctoral degree (With the exception of the Contraception and Infertility Research LRP)
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • Conduct qualified research for at least 20 hours per week
  • Receive funding from a domestic nonprofit source (e.g., a university or government entity)
  • Be a non-federal employee (or qualified part-time federal employee)
  • Have qualified educational debt equal to or exceeding 20% of your salary

  • 2014 Biomedical Postdoctoral Research Symposium, November 18

    The Biomedical Postdoctoral Council (BPC) and the Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs (BPP) are pleased to announce the 13th Annual Biomedical Postdoctoral Research Symposium, to be held on Tuesday November 18th in the BRB Auditorium and Lobby. All BPP postdocs are encouraged to participate and register.

    Prizes to be awarded to postdoc presenters:
    The Kumar memorial lecture award - $1250
    The AUM LifeTech best oral presentation award - $1250
    The AUM LifeTech best poster award - $750
    The Charles River Laboratories award for best implementation of the 3Rs in animal research - $500
    BPC Runner-up Poster awards - $200 and $100
    NEB poster award emphasizing the use of NextGen sequencing in the research design"- $250

    The FREE symposium will include poster sessions and oral presentations, with generous prizes for best poster and research talks sponsored by AUM LifeTech, followed by a networking reception with food and drinks. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. Michael Young of The Rockefeller University, one of the first researchers to uncover the molecular basis for circadian rhythms, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and a recipient of numerous awards including the 2013 Shaw Prize, the 2012 Massry Prize and the 2011 Wiley Prize.

    2014-2015 Grant Opportunities from the Parkinson's Disease Foundation

    The Parkinson's Disease Foundation has several grant opportunities for the upcoming 2014-2015 grant cycle. Letters of intent for the PDF Postdoctoral Fellowship (for Basic Scientists and Neurologists) open Saturday, November 1 and are due Monday, December 1.

    They also have summer fellowships for medical and undergraduate students to conduct research, travel awards for graduate and medical students to present data at PD-related conferences, conference awards for established investigators to organize a meeting on PD, and partnership awards with the Parkinson Study Group and Howard Hughes Medical Institute for clinicians.

    Description:
    The Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) is a CHOP-wide effort to interrupt the cycle of violence that builds on years of hospital and community partnership and research. Through the practice of trauma-informed care, which recognizes that traumatic experiences affect how people respond to outreach and services, this initiative positions CHOP to become a national model for hospital-led youth violence prevention. This session will provide an overview of the VPI and highlight signature research programs that focus on developing interventions to reduce school bullying, domestic violence in the home, and assault in the community.

    iPraxis Mentors Still Needed for Belmont Charter School in West Philadelphia

    The 6th-8th grade students at Belmont Charter School were supposed to start their mentoring program the week of November 3, however iPraxis is still short mentors. Mentoring will now begin November 17 and 18. Please consider joining iPraxis for 12 weeks, which will help provide students with a deeper understanding of science and engineering.

    BPP Postdoc Travel Award Program

    The University of Pennsylvania Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs (BPP) announces the establishment of the BPP Postdoc Travel Award Program.

    This award program is funded by contributions from UPenn's Aetna health insurance cost savings and the Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs. All postdocs currently registered with the BPP are eligible to apply for one travel award per calendar year. The maximum amount of each award will be $500.

    Complete applications should be submitted to the Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs at least one month prior to the anticipated travel event.

    The eligibility criteria and terms of the BPP Travel Award Program are as follows:

  • Participants must currently hold a postdoctoral appointment in one of the four participating schools or be currently registered with the BPP through an affiliate group/institution
  • Participants must currently hold a postdoctoral appointment at the time of the application for travel funds, during the travel period and upon return from the traveled destination
  • Participant must be a presenting attendee in order to be eligible for this award (poster presenter and/or platform presenter)
  • Applicants are expected to have some level of funding support from their PIs/mentors or Department/Divisions to be eligible
  • Awards will be processed as reimbursements
