All too often, the textual portions of scientific writing seem to be a data dump of one observation after another. In this workshop, we look at how readers' expectations for context and emphasis can guide writers toward logical development of the scientific substance.

A luncheon will be hosted by Judith Swan with invitations to key faculty to join. Boxed lunches will be provided. Note: You must attend the morning session in order to attend the luncheon.

In this workshop, we investigate a common problem of scientific documents: How to present ALL the data and still ensure that the important information receives its proper emphasis. Using examples taken from reviews of grant applications, we explore how changing simply the structure of the language can lead to changes in the interpretation of the science.
