    Postdoc/Physician Fellows: Serve as 2014 CRISSP Poster Day Judges, August 7

    We are currently recruiting up to 16 postdoctoral fellows and physician fellows to judge scientific posters at the CHOP Research Institute Summer Scholars Program (CRISSP) poster session on Thursday, August 7 from 11:30am-1:00pm in the Abramson Lobby.

    CRISSP is a highly competitive summer internship program for undergraduate students interested in careers in biomedical research. Twenty-five students have been selected to participate this summer from a pool of over 500 applicants.

    As part of their internship experience, all CRISSP students must complete an independent research project presented during the August 7 poster session. Judges will be asked to visit several assigned posters during the judging period and identify the best research project. Judging criteria will be provided to guide the selection process. A judges meeting will be held at 1:00pm in ARC 809 to discuss the winners.

    A new addition to CRISSP Poster Day will emulate CHOP Research Poster Day, where students will be split into 3 judging tracks: Basic, Translational, and Behavioral/Clinical. In response to the revised judging format, we are looking for 4 basic research judges, 4 translational research judges, and 8 behavioral and/or clinical research judges. Judges are also invited to attend the awards ceremony from 4:00pm-6:00pm, Thursday, August 7 in Abramson 123-ABC.

    This conference is focused on the blood-based cancers and associated disorders categorized as hematologic malignancies and will include presentations on leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome, and myeloproliferative neoplasms. This conference will span the spectrum of relevant cancer science and medicine, from basic science discoveries to their translation in the clinic, and will cover those scientific areas that cut across all blood cancers such as genomics, epigenetics, cell death pathways, and the tumor microenvironment, as well as translational and clinical topics such as targetable signaling pathways, drug development, immunotherapy, other treatment modalities, and early clinical trials

    Advances in Melanoma: From Biology to Therapy

    Despite the success of various “targeted” inhibitors, therapeutic responses in melanoma patients are often short-lived due to rapidly acquired drug resistance. Therefore, it is essential that melanoma researchers translate the novel understanding of melanoma biology to decipher the mechanisms of innate and acquired drug resistance for the development of improved therapeutic options. To bridge the gap between scientists and clinician-scientists’ professional practice, this conference will provide a platform for discussion and potential collaborations for the discovery of new therapeutic targets.

    Targeting the PI3K-mTOR Network in Cancer
    September 14-17, 2014

    This AACR conference will highlight recent progress in understanding the molecular wiring of the PI3K-mTOR signaling network and its activation in cancer, the major downstream functions contributing to cancer pathology, and therapeutic strategies for targeting the network and overcoming resistance. Talks will range from structural, pharmacological, and mechanistic insights to genetic mouse models and results from clinical trials. The program is designed to foster interactions between basic and clinical investigators and to emphasize critical discussions around the most pressing topics. Opportunities for early career researchers and trainees to present through oral and poster presentations are an important part of the program.


    Research Trainee Orientation Session, July 10

    The Office of Responsible Research Training, in conjunction with the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Department of Pediatrics, will be offering a, orientation session for training grant, postdoctoral, or physician fellows who will be moving into a "research trainee" status and receiving stipends for Fiscal Year 2015, beginning on July 1, 2014.

    Location: Abramson Research Center, Room 123-AB
    Time: 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

    The orientation sessions will provide information on the health and benefits package, financial and tax implications, and training requirements and will offer other valuable resources for new trainees. For questions, contact Janet Stuart, or 267-426-7496.


    Introduction To Clinical Research Course at UPenn

    Registration for the Introduction to Clinical Research, offered by ITMAT, for the 2014-15 academic year is now open. The course is primarily geared towards junior faculty, fellows and post docs who have an interest in learning about the practical aspects involved in undertaking clinical research. Clinical research staff members are also eligible to enroll if their application is supported by their supervisor. Lectures are organized into modules covering four main content areas:

  • Module III: Study Conduct
  • Module IV: Scientific Conduct & Regulation

    The SSRC is an exciting summer lecture series designed specifically for scientific trainees (i.e., physician fellows, postdoctoral fellows, pre-matriculation graduate students, medical students, undergraduates, selected high school students, CRISSP scholars) who are new or returning to biomedical research. The series provides research and career development insights through "chalk talks" given by some of CHOP’s most distinguished physician-scientists and mentors. These speakers will lead interactive discussions aimed at demystifying academic medicine and helping trainees to "make the right moves." The sessions are held on Mondays (5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) in the Abramson Research Center or Colket Translational Research Building and will continue through July 28th.

    Postdoctoral Position Available at Thomas Jefferson University

    Position Type: Cancer and miR Biology Postdoctoral Position at Thomas Jefferson University

    Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow

    Position Description: The Simone Laboratory in the Radiation Oncology Department at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral fellow to work in the area of cancer and radiation biology. Our laboratory has 2 main focuses: 1) how stressors such as radiation effect microRNA using a knock out mouse generated in our laboratory and, 2) using dietary alteration to enhance radiation. Our work is funded for hormonally responsive cancers such as breast and prostate and we are working with both in vitro and in vivo models. In addition, from the pre- clinical data generated in the Simone Laboratory, we have now opened a clinical trial with breast cancer patients which allows for the laboratory to evaluate translational endpoints of our basic science research.

    Experience Required: The candidate must be highly motivated, independent and interested in our projects. The candidate must have PhD in molecular biology, cell biology or a cancer related field. Although not absolutely necessary, the ideal candidate will preferably have some experience with caloric restriction, epigenetics, microRNA or radiation biology. Expertise in microarray analysis, RT- PCR, ChIP, cloning, mouse husbandry, in vivo tumor experiments are also a plus. The successful candidate will of course have mentoring so that career goals can be achieved, but must be able to independently generate hypotheses, design experiments to test the hypothesis, performs routine and more difficult procedures, analyze data and coherently present results in the form of presentations, abstracts, manuscripts and the basis for grant writing, preparation and submission. In addition, qualified candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills, and a demonstrated record of scientific achievement through peer-reviewed publications. Successful, well-motivated candidates will join a highly interactive, interdisciplinary team of researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise in a collaborative scientific environment. Preference will be given to individuals with these skill sets who are now completing their thesis work and have at least one high- impact publication.

    BPP Postdoc Travel Award Program

    The University of Pennsylvania Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs (BPP) announces the establishment of the BPP Postdoc Travel Award Program.

    This award program is funded by contributions from UPenn's Aetna health insurance cost savings and the Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs. All postdocs currently registered with the BPP are eligible to apply for one travel award per calendar year. The maximum amount of each award will be $500.

    Complete applications should be submitted to the Office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs at least one month prior to the anticipated travel event.

    The eligibility criteria and terms of the BPP Travel Award Program are as follows:

  • Participants must currently hold a postdoctoral appointment in one of the four participating schools or be currently registered with the BPP through an affiliate group/institution
  • Participants must currently hold a postdoctoral appointment at the time of the application for travel funds, during the travel period and upon return from the traveled destination
  • Participant must be a presenting attendee in order to be eligible for this award (poster presenter and/or platform presenter)
  • Applicants are expected to have some level of funding support from their PIs/mentors or Department/Divisions to be eligible
  • Awards will be processed as reimbursements
